First Aid Herbs

Notes I took at Gulf Wars as I missed the handout!

Peppermint, awakening (open a jar and take a whiff if you need a quick lift!). upset stomach, diarrhea.

Lavender, Apply to temples or inhale - it is calming in the event of a crisis. Sooths burns.

Chamomile, apply teabag to spot. Drink to relax and fix upset stomach. antibacterial.

Comfrey (leaf), not Russian, skin healer. Bone mending in medieval.

Yarrow, Stops bleeding. Battle surgeon's herb. Toothache. Reduces swelling. Brew as a tea for fever. Can make a hemorrhoid paste. Helps PMS.

Aloe Vera, we all know this one as a sunburn gel. It's cooling, and healing. Personal note - aloe vera is great both internal (juice, you can buy in pharmacy section even at Wal Mart) and external for a ton of stuff! Just don't drink *too* much at once, can have laxative effect.

Plantain, (no not the banana-like fruit! The plant with the "pop gun" seeds if you ever "shot" those as a kid.) Good for skin. Use for burns, insect bites, rashes, and sores. Use the leaves. astringent, put on cuts, bites, stings, and treats poison oak.

Dandelion, (not Sow's thistle, that looks like it but has stickers) As it's a mild dieuretic, it is beneficial for swelling like sprained ankles. Flushes out toxins. Apply externally to draw out fluid. Insect bites too.

Echinacea, Use liquid extract for fever, poison (30 drops every 15 minutes?), internal infection. anti-inflammatory. Colds.

Callendula, (not marigolds!), soothing. Eczema or heat rash. Great for a child, try a salve or ointment. Antiseptic. Prevents bacterial growth. If added with rose petals to oil, very soothing and healing.
